tagging could be an alternative - this could also us tags provided by others

We hadn't been thinking of folders but I do believe that having spaces with topics (sub conversations) could be another way of organizing - so you have a parent space/project and then the topics are "sub spaces" under this.

Does that sound like it could serve the need?

With topics, you create a hierarchy for all members. Folders are a way for personalization. I think both are important.

topics can be useful and I agree with Arnd that Folders are more flexible as individuals could group by their personal need.

Quick update: Some of our thinking around favorites is leading us a little closer in this direction.  Maybe not quite as structured as you are imagining but we definitely have some ideas.  I'll leave it at that for now  :)

I'm looking for a little more freedom as to how to group things. Subject doesn't always work and really won't work with the way I use work spaces.  Is it possible to do something similar to iOS and just grab spaces you want together into groups?  it is better than a long list of spaces.

    One more thought:

Sorting spaces by last updated will work for receiving updates. But you also may want to

    1. send messages to spaces that haven't been active for a while.
    2. research information you have seen a while ago.

For those, search is an essential feature. But ...

    • search doesn't always work - I often remember where I saw something but not the words used.
    • not everyone is comfortable relying on search - there are still lots of people out there that put eMails into folders. I've come to believe that's kind of a personality trait and not being stubborn.

So haveing a way to organize your spaces is what we need.

This has nothing to do with mail folders or any reluctance to search.  Not everyone works the same way; what may work for one doesn't necessarily work for all. May help to think about it as it currently in the form of a sequential database vs. a relational db.This is about spaces that relate to each other in ways I can see and gaining quick access to them rather than doing searches for everything and then deciding what to select when I already know what to select. Scrolling though a list that does get longer isn't the most efficient way for everyone to work.

I had a customer meeting yesterday and this was something he brought up as a definite "nice to have".

The customer app we have created for Worskspace will automatically create spaces when detecting new docs created at the Domino back end. The spaces are also automatically assigned to a primary person (there are about 20 of these) plus several admin and management staff. There may be up to 1200 active spaces split between the 20 primary staff but the admin/management staff will have all 1200 spaces. This is going to seriously clog up the Worskpace UI. Also, there will be a lot of action on these 1200 spaces so of course the latest updated space will always rise to the top constantly all day.

As they wish to use Workspace for other purposes, he would like all of these 1200 spaces under 1 "folder" in the UI which he can select and see the contents (1200 spaces). This would leave the overall UI a lot cleaner for other work related spaces.

When our app creates new spaces, we could very easily "tag" each space and the user could then have the option to "group" tagged spaces (or not) under their preferences?

This one is straight from a customer !
