    Hey Patrick,

    It depends on where you are deploying your application. If you're testing it locally you can set it in the command prompt right before you run the start command, so that it gets picked up when the application starts up. Also note, the syntax is different if you're on windows. If you're deploying to Bluemix, for example, then there is a section for "Environment Variables" in the application dashboard where you can set the variables.
